Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Alaska

Alaska has no statewide property tax — property tax happens at the borough and city level. State law (AS 29.45.030) forces those local governments to exempt the first $150,000 of assessed value on a qualifying disabled veteran's home, and lets them exempt more.

Who qualifies
A resident disabled veteran who owns and occupies the property as a permanent home and is certified by the VA as disabled (including 100% service-connected or paid at the 100% rate for unemployability — confirm the exact certification your borough requires)
Benefit
Mandatory exemption of the first $150,000 of assessed value under AS 29.45.030(e); municipalities may exempt more by local ordinance (hardship provisions exist). In unorganized-borough areas with no property tax there is nothing to exempt
How to apply
Apply with your borough or city assessor — deadlines and forms are local (many fall between January and April 1)
Watch out
This is the senior/disabled-veteran exemption most Alaska boroughs administer; the paperwork and any extra local amount vary by borough

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
