Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Kansas

Kansas has no property-tax exemption for disabled veterans — it runs a property-tax refund instead. What you qualify for depends on which program and, in some cases, on income. Here is what actually exists.

Who qualifies
The Homestead Refund program covers homeowners who were 65+ or permanently disabled (under an agency of the U.S. Social Security Administration) for all of the year — a veteran with a 100% P&T VA rating generally does not automatically qualify unless they also meet the program's disability definition. A separate Kansas disabled-veteran property-tax relief path has been proposed repeatedly (SB 201, 2025) but was not enacted
Benefit
Homestead Refund: up to $700 or a base-year freeze for qualifying claimants — not a veteran-specific program
How to apply
Homestead Refund: file with the Kansas Department of Revenue (income limits apply)
Watch out
Veteran-specific property-tax relief keeps coming up in the legislature — check the current session before assuming nothing exists; also confirm whether KDVA-administered exemptions apply in your situation

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
