Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Minnesota

Minnesota doesn't exempt the tax — it excludes market value: $300,000 for a veteran rated 100% permanent and total, $150,000 at 70% or higher. That is a big slice of a typical Minnesota home taken off the tax roll.

Who qualifies
Honorably discharged veterans with a VA rating of 70%+ service-connected ($150,000 exclusion) or 100% permanent and total ($300,000); unremarried surviving spouses (receiving DIC or where the veteran was 100% P&T) get $300,000; qualifying primary family caregivers qualify too
Benefit
Market-value exclusion of $150,000 or $300,000 on the homesteaded property — the county reduces taxable market value, which flows through every taxing jurisdiction
How to apply
Apply to your county assessor's office by December 31 to qualify for taxes payable in the next year (the DOR's application page states the deadline)
Watch out
This is a value exclusion, not a tax refund — the dollar benefit depends on your local rate; surviving-spouse carryover rules on moving or selling have specific conditions

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
