Veteran Property Tax Exemption — New Jersey

New Jersey's 100% Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption is total: 100% of property tax on the dwelling, for veterans who were 100% permanently and totally disabled from service during active duty — in one of the highest-property-tax states in America, so the dollars are enormous.

Who qualifies
Honorably discharged veterans who were declared 100% permanently and totally disabled, service-incurred, during active duty (including compensation at the 100% rate for service-connected unemployability); unmarried surviving spouses of such veterans qualify too
Benefit
Full exemption from property tax on the dwelling house and the lot (N.J.S.A. 54:4-3.30 et seq.) — the whole bill on the dwelling disappears, not a fixed dollar amount; the NJ Division of Taxation publishes the current average residential bill for every district
How to apply
File form DVSSE with your municipal tax assessor with VA certification of the service-connected 100% permanent and total disability
Watch out
The disability must be service-incurred — read the DVSSE instructions before filing. The separate $250 veterans deduction (wartime service) and $6,100 surviving-spouse deduction are smaller add-ons worth claiming

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
